Gateway Program HVAC Instructor

Skillpoint Alliance is a 501(c)3 social enterprise that serves local industry and the community through workforce education programs.  Skillpoint’s flagship program, Gateway, provides rapid workforce training to participants, preparing them for entry-level employment in high demand industries. SUMMARY OF POSITION:

A Gateway Program Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) Instructor is primarily responsible for instructing participants in the HVAC and Construction industry hard skills.  This position also serves as a role model, collaborating with Skillpoint staff to support employability skills training (such as soft skills and other life skills).  Class schedules depend on programming demands, and may include day or evening classes.

 

ESSENTIAL POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Hard skills instruction responsibilities include:

  • Preparing lesson plans based on provided curriculum, including commercial, industrial, and residential HVAC and refrigeration systems, chillers, boilers, package units, pneumatics, controls, & refrigeration
  • Developing lists of supplies needed for instruction based on provided curriculum
  • Assisting with purchasing of classroom program supplies
  • Developing projects and activities based on provided curriculum topics
  • Teaching courses as assigned, instructing and evaluating participant performance, encouraging skill development, and providing feedback to encourage student growth
  • Supervising and monitoring participants’ use of tools and equipment
  • Adhering to education regulations set forth by Skillpoint Alliance staff
  • Accepting recommendations for improving curriculum delivery
  • Proctoring both written and performance tests

 

Classroom management responsibilities include:

  • Communicating equipment, supply, and scheduling needs to Skillpoint Alliance staff
  • Organizing, setting up, and maintaining equipment and/or supplies during class
  • Managing negative participant classroom behavior and encouraging positive behavior
  • Filing and organizing information for classes
  • Maintaining confidentiality of participant information

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Qualified applicants will possess the following education, experience, and/or certification(s)/license(s):

  • 3 – 5 years of field experience in the HVAC industry, with technical-level knowledge and skills needed for successful instruction
  • Prior experience helping others learn job tasks
  • Prior classroom teaching experience preferred, but not required
  • Active NATE, RSES Certification (CM, SM, CMS), HVAC Excellence, or comparable national certification
  • EPA 608 Universal Certification
  • Licensed HVAC Journeyperson highly preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Moderate amount of computer work is required using Microsoft Office software (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word)
  • Work environment includes both classroom and industrial arts spaces
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including days and evenings
  • Requires local and occasional, reimbursable regional travel, often with personal vehicle

 

COMPENSATION:

  • Pay rate is hourly, $25 - $35, depending on experience
